Wrangell, AK

Wrangell, AK 7/25-7/27

Soulstice arrived mid-afternoon to Wrangell on 7/25/23 and took a side tie just behind the breakwater. It was about a mile to walk to town from the Heritage Harbor where we were assigned by the Harbor Master. On the dock waiting for us as we docked were Chase and John from Mrs. Treva. They were on the dock adjacent but had plans to haul out in the morning. They have a faulty aqua marine drive and John's brother was flying in to help with the installation.

Karen, Stephen, and I walked into town and checked out the local scene. It is smaller than Petersburg but still has some of the local amenities. We decided to treat ourselves to dinner and enjoyed a local pizza joint. It was ok but the beer was good:)

The next day we sent Karen off for a walk and Stephen and I attempted to get some of the green beard growing on the hull and waterline of Soulstice removed. I used the paddleboard and scrubbed/scraped the water line and Stephen chose to put on a wet suit and check out the prop, thru-hulls, and keel. He did several passes and gave us a good inspection. Afterward, Soulstice looked much improved and we felt better getting a good glance at our zines, hull, and prop/rudder.

We have been getting more growth than usual this season and are due for haul out probably next summer. After that, it was still early and we went to town with Karen to check out the Mt. Dewey trailhead. John Muir had apparently visited this trail as well in the past.

Our visit to Wrangell was short as we left in the morning of July 27th to start our journey through Eastern Passage to Blake Channel and then south in Ernest Sound. This would be the beginning of moving towards Behm Canal for the journey into Misty Fjords National Monument. John and Chase were still hauled out and we knew we would see them down the road. We wished them success on their boat project.

Replica of Chief Shakes Tribal House - it was restored in 2013 and reported that every plank was carved using traditional Tlinglit carving methods.
